Season 1 | Episode 16 | The value of cotton

Cotton is a unique crop in the sense that it is the only agricultural commodity that provides fibre and food for human and animal consumption. It is produced in more than 100 countries, contributing more than 100 million jobs worldwide, and is regarded as the world’s most important fibre which has been used for more than seven thousand years. This is also why the World Trade Organisation decided to highlight the value of this unique crop, and in 2019 launched a World Cotton Day to celebrate this incredible fibre on the 7th of October each year. This week’s episode of Tech Terrain coincides with World Cotton Day on Wednesday – and it will be a celebration of the global importance of this unique crop. Tony Ndoro talks to Hennie Bruwer, Executive Officer: Cotton SA, and Tanya Aucamp, Independent Communication Specialist: Cotton SA about the partnerships in the local industry to promote cotton production. We then welcome two cotton producers: Leonard Venter, Chairperson: Cotton SA Board, and Jozeph du Plessis, Director: Locklore Farming to learn more about the challenges and prospects of this commodity. And finally, Philip du Plessis, Area Sales Manager: John Deere Africa and Middle East (JD AME), and Lucas Groenewald, Sales Manager, Southern Africa: JD AME are back in studio to discuss the latest and greatest technology in this sector. Tech Terrain is powered by John Deere, in collaboration with Farmer’s Weekly and Brand Republic.
